Exploring the views from character, structure and ideology, the paper gives a comparison between 〈Heroes of Marshes〉 and 〈The Story of Hong Kildong〉.
From the person’s character, the borning of heroes from Liangshan Lake has been described little negatively, while which of Hong Kildong has been described very positively.
The two novels also show difference from the structure. Heroes in the “Marshes” finally goes back to reality after escape out of reality, showing a changing process of from resistance to defection, as well as from the world of personal loyalty to the world of loyalty to emperor. On the other hand, Hong Kildong expands his scope of activities from family to whole country, and finally broadening to overseas, accompanied with continuous rise of his social position.
From the view of ideology, “personal loyalty” or “loyalty to emperor” which appeared in 〈Heroes of Marshes〉 can not be found in 〈The Story of Hong Kildong〉, what we can see is the spirit of resistance to Chaosun Dynasty. In〈Heroes of Marshes〉, women is deemed to be a obstacle of being as a hero, reflecting solitude of abandoning family, mentality of revenging on his enemies by all means, which those ideology does not showed in 〈The Story of Hong Kildong〉.
According to the analysis mentioned above, we can come to the conclusion that 〈The Story of Hong Kildong〉 is not a imitated from 〈Heroes of Marshes〉, and is an original literary work.
