The present study attempts to discern the distinctive non Han Chinese characteristics of Koguryo tomb paintings which are different from Han Chinese tomb murals by comparing with those built by the Northern people or during the Wei-Jin and Northern Dynasties periods in China.
In this paper, the non Han Chinese characteristics in funerary arts of Koguryo and other Northern people were explored, especially in terms of nomadic culture, Central Asian features, and Buddhist cave temple art.
Considering the facts that Koguryo made an advanced evolution in tomb murals than Xianbei people who built the Northern Wei and Northern Qi, it is quite possible that Koguryo could have exerted a great influence on the development of funerary art by other non Han Chinese people, and that Koguryo made such significant contribution in the entire evolution of East Asian funerary alt.
The wide range of interactions made by Koguryo people with non Han Chinese, Han Chinese, as well as Cental and West Asian people which are exhibited in Koguryo wall paintings provides us with solid evidence that Koguryo tombs and wall paintigs are such extraordinary cultural heritage to be studied and preserved.
