The studies in the relation between the Goryeo(高麗) Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty understood that Goryeo was overridden its independence and suffered a political intervention and a economical exploitation by Yuan. The studies in the history of ideas laid emphasis on the acceptance of Sung Confucianism(朱子學) and ImJeSeon(臨濟禪). These studies were limited because they set a low value on the period of Yuan Dynasty's intervention or regarded Confucianism and Buddhism as two different things.
This paper examined a cultural interchange between the Goryeo Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty centering around the pilgrimage. First, both Confucian scholar and Zen priest went on a pilgrimage with thought and faith in Buddhism. It had close relation to the trend of the times of religious unities among Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Second, we could understand the acceptance of Buddhism in Goryeo through their pilgrimage. Goryeo Buddhism had fundamental limits such as the spread of Zen books(禪籍), a manual of ganwhaseon(看話禪), the recognition(認可) aimed at the pursuit of Dharma(求法), and so on. Third, new culture, art and science of Yuan were introduced into Goryeo. Books such as an agricultural book and a map of the world had close relation with the south China's publishing culture, and the culture and thought of Great Yuan Empire, Ulus which spread all over the world through the cultural exchange between the East and the West. Fourth, the cultural exchange through pilgrimage was active throughout East Asian countries including Japan.
