This paper examines the major political events of the Yuan Empire mentioned in Lee Gok(李穀)’s Gajeongjip (稼亭集, the Literary Collections of Lee Gok). It also explores in depth figures of the Yuan Empire who have hitherto remained uninvestigated in prior studies. Lee Gok wrote about these people as well as about the political situation in the Yuan Empire, a fact suggesting that there were Goryeo people involved in major events that occurred in the Yuan Empire and who were firsthand witnesses of events happening in the country. In literary works included in Gajeongjip , Lee Gok also mentions the names of several writers whom he was acquainted with as well as prominent figures in the history of the Yuan Empire.
The late Goryeo dynasty saw ceaseless tension between those wishing to maintain Goryeo’s social conventions and those hoping to introduce the laws of the Yuan Empire into Goryeo. This tension represents an important characteristics of the late Goryeo dynasty. Gajeongjip includes not only various political events and figures in Goryeo and the Yuan Empire but also Lee Gok’s careful contemplation of political systems of the time. In other words, Gajeongjip covers a wide range of subjects, from important figures and events in the two countries to diverse issues related to Goryeo-Yuan relations, meaning that this book is a valuable historical source for the study of the late-Yuan and late-Goryeo period.
