This study examines the historical relationship between Goryeo and the Mongol(Yuan) dynasty, aiming to integrate diverse perspectives and methodologies in its analysis. The Goryeo-Mongol(Yuan) relationship, traditionally viewed through the lens of ‘tribute-investiture’ or ‘subjugation,’ has undergone significant reinterpretation due to recent advancements in academic research. Three notable works published in 2024 — the Korean translation of Morihira Masahiko’s analysis of Goryeo as part of the Mongol(Yuan) political structure; Lee Gang-han’s examination of Goryeo’s selective adoption of Mongol(Yuan) policies, and Kwon Yong-cheol’s exploration of Goryeo records as valuable sources for Mongol(Yuan) history —highlight these varied approaches.
These studies collectively emphasize the multifaceted nature of the Goryeo-Mongol(Yuan) interaction, transcending simplistic dichotomies of autonomy versus subjugation. By synthesizing these perspectives, this paper calls for a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the Goryeo-Mongol(Yuan) relationship, which reflects the broader patterns of East Asian historical interactions during the Mongol Empire’s reign in 13~14th centuries.
