The purpose of this study is to analyze Hawthorne's attention on nature and women in the light of ecofeminism, which includes the reconsideration about the dichotomy and the discovery of feminine principle symbolized in nature. Both nature and women have been historically victimized by the anthropocentric view of nature and patriarchy. However, deep ecology and social one only emphasize on the exploitation of nature without considering all sorts of oppression of women. And traditional feminism neglects an ecological crisis. Ecofeminism tries to solve the problems of oppression of both nature and women through the relation of ecological philosophies with various feminism theories. Hawthorne shows the same standpoints with ecofeminism position in his work, The Scarlet Letter. This study focuses on Hawthorne's ecofeminist viewpoint in the work which include the relationship between nature-women and nature-men.
In The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne represents superiority of nature and women by comparing women in nature with man in Puritan community. Forests suggest nature and Puritan community implies androcentric culture. When they are in forests, Pearl and Hester create the harmony and energy of life, but Chillingworth and Dimmesdale not only destroy nature and women but also themselves.
In his work, Hawthorne describes nature-women as Gaia, 'earth mother'. Gaia is like a physical mother who creates all things and cares for them. Therefore, nature and women as Gaia can be a solution to healing all the wounds from the andropocentric society and overcoming the ecosystem crisis. In this respect, Hawthorne's viewpoint is consistent with ecofeminist’s.
