Just as the folk songs of every country are strongly influenced by its language, Korean traditional folk songs have the Korean language as their basis, and were sung in every comer of daily life, reflecting Korean values and attitudes toward life. As a result, educational value of folk songs is very high. They are suitable for teaching jangdan and sigimsae based on the meters and the intonation of the Korean language, and are also suitable for teaching social and cultural values through history and cultures. However, despite the fact that many people basically agree that folk songs are important for music class, folk songs have been taught with the same factors and activities as fur the songs of western music because of a limitation in the curriculum and a lack of understanding of the educational methodology required for Korean music. For this reason, the intrinsic nature of folk songs has often been taught in schools in a distorted manner.
The Revised Curriculum of 2007 is focused on the qualitative improvement of the teaching of Korean music. This paper discussed what contents of folk songs should be selected, and taught in terms of the musical aspects and the socio-cultural context based on the Revised Curriculum of 2007. It also examined how to reflect the intrinsic characteristics and values of folk songs in school education.
While the Revised Curriculum of 2007 is focused on 'the qualitative improvement of the Korean music education', folk songs are still being taught differently in schools from their intrinsic nature. For example, in teaching folk songs, a western musical instrument, like a piano, is used fur harmony and accompaniment. In this respect, now is the turning point at which we should think about the purpose and the meaning of teaching folk songs. Quantitative matters - how many folk songs are covered in the music textbook-are important, but how and what to teach is important also.
