Elementary music education in Korea has been subjected to the influence of America and Europe. Especially, the school system for music class in Korea is similar to the system in Germany. In this sense, music education researchers are in a position to question how foreign folks music is concerned in German elementary school. Viewed from this angle, it is important to check folk songs and instrumental works that are included in music textbooks in public schools because the music textbooks exert a direct influence upon the teaching contents and methods of music classes. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the multicultural approach of elementary music textbooks in Germany. To examine the problem of presentation types for foreign folks music, we need a systematic analysis of the lesson units and materials. The object of this study is Rondo series published by the company Mildenberger. Most folks tunes that are found in the music text books come from Western culture, especially from Europe. There are only one folk song from the East Asia and two form Africa among over eighty pieces of music in the music text books. The foreign folks songs are applied chiefly to material to teach European musical elements. But every music text book except first Grade (2nd to 6th Grade) has a multicultural subject unit, while multicultural contents as a teaching theme are treated on rare occasions. The results of the analysis have to be discussed in relation to teaching process of each lesson unit. To receive other musical idioms, it seems to be necessary that every country follows after her cultural identity. So, Korea has to find a own perspective on foreign folks music for teaching music in elementary school.
