This paper examines how music class works in the secondary schools in New York, U.S. Music is taught as an elective from upper elementary school to high school. It is one of the separate subjects among the arts which is required for graduation. Learning Standards for The Arts states concrete objectives of music education and presents in depth objectives that understand music in cultural, social, and historical contexts. The Arts Standards sets up Content Standards that follow Achievement Standards. This format, in which each learning content specifies its levels of achievement, facilitates the understanding of achievement that students are expected to attain in the competencies for music at the completion of learning. Music classes in secondary schools provide a variety of programs and have considerably higher level of learning and more learning contents compared to those of Korea. In the period of globalization, the investigation of American music education gives some implications in the current Korean music education, and it would be helpful to improve the substance of school music education and develop insights for the quality of future Korean music education.
