The struggle for women's liberation in China during the 20th century had progressed in combination with the forming of the nation state. It was Liang Qichao who made the greatest contribution during this period to getting people to recognize that women are an integral part of a nation. This person regarded education for women to be important, stating that women also should receive an education to become productive socially, without being confined to domestic duties and contributing to the formation of national wealth as well as supporting the household. He also considered women's education to be absolutely necessary for bearing exceptional children and educating them. Along the same lines, he explained careers or education for women to be related to the profit of a nation and society in general, and thus ignored particular characteristics of females. Nationalism came first, and feminism followed. However, though he regarded it as a means, he placed importance on women's productive activity and believed that it could improve the position of women who had been repressed thus far. In addition, his appeal for women to take interest in significant events of state and society with open minds surely made a huge contribution to raising women's independence and sense of participation.
The Woman's World, first published in 1904 in Shanghai, reflected his position.
Writers of this magazine heralded women as the mother of a nation and insisted that towards this goal, women should respect and take pride in themselves, be economically independent and make independent decisions. In particular, they had a strong sense of responsibility that women should participate in overcoming the national crisis. Also, they cited it as one of the ways for women to serve the nation, to well educate their children and raise them as great citizens of a nation. On the other hand, they expressed rejected words like 'a good wife and wise mother.' At that time, these words meant women who received a good education were to support their husbands and educate their children well, and they criticized that it was ideology that degraded women as high-level slaves to their husbands and children.
Young girls who came to a realization after reading this magazine grew up to become housewife or career woman in the 1920s-30s. Regardless of being a housewife or career woman, and regardless of politics or party, their sense of responsibility that women should also be accountable for national prosperity and downfall, and that women should be included in the workforce to be independent began from Liang Qichao, who was an intellectual of the early 20th century, and the magazine The Woman's World.
