Traditionally, rhetoric is the study and practice of persuasion. But, according to Richards, ancient Rhetoric was "the theory of the battle of words and has always been itself dominated by the combative impulse". Up until now, this tendency doesn't seem to have changed much. Foss/Foss even say that conquest rhetoric and conversion rhetoric have become almost 《default modes of communication》 nowadays. The case of scholarly communications doesn't seem radically different. Nonetheless, we can observe the emergence, in the last few decades, of diverse 《Wave rhetorics》, community - oriented, in contrast with traditional 《Particle rhetorics》, individual-centered. One of them is the Rhetoric of Inquiry, especially valuable for the human sciences, which aim "to integrate rhetoric of inquiry into the normal business of scholarship". However, for scholarly communications, it seems important, as argues Meiland, to distinguish Argument as Inquiry, process-oriented, from Argument as Persuasion, product-oriented, largely dominant in scholarly communications. Perelman's New Rhetoric, Crosswhite's Rhetoric of Reason, and Meyer's Problematological Rhetoric could usefully contribute to the study of this Argument as Inquiry. Besides these rhetorics, it seems necessary to take into consideration other rhetorics more oriented towards Wave Rhetoric, such as Burke's Rhetoric of Identification, Booth's Listening Rhetoric, Rogerian Rhetoric, Gorsevski's Non-violent Rhetoric, and Foss/Foss's Invitational Rhetoric. In this search towards Wave Rhetorics for scholarly communications in Human Sciences, recent Asian Communication Studies, as found, for example, in China Media Research, are not to be omitted. Gordon even suggests the "harmony theory" of Asian Cultures to "transcend seeing 'communication' as primarily strategic, goal - driven, ego - enhancing, ego - defending instrumental message - sending behaviour". To deepen the research on these wave rhetorics, we also need to reconsider the problem of language and misunderstanding, which is a main cause for communicational conflicts. This is a long and hard work which demands much imagination, creativity, and endeavor, but is worth it.
