The purpose of this dissertation is to study the system of moral philosophy reflected in the works of the Chinese philosopher Jangjae (nom de plume: Hoingger, A.D. 1020-1070), one of the six sages of the Song dynasty. Jangjae's notion of the moral philosophy can be shown to be founded on the view that the organic relation between subjective morality and social humanity is based on the dialectical connection between the substantive and phenomenal, which for him results in a monistic view of spirituality. Firstly, Jangjae raised the question of whether or not the rationale for the heavenly world can incorporate subjective morality and human social order. Assuming the primacy of human social order as a rationale underlying the existence of the universe, or universal organism, Jangjae seeks ultimately to transform this human social order into man's internal and intrinsic nature, to which human spirituality can than be epiphenomenally 'equated'. Secondly, it was a requisite of Confucianism that, via the cultivation of the human mind, the rationale for the natural world and that for the social order of the human world be clearly seen not to be essentially different from one another.
Finally, Jangjae is clearly conscious of the need to determine the definition of the nature of the community of humanity whose rationale lies in the substantiveness the universe.
In conclusion, Jangjae's views are presented as a summation of his ideas of what constitutes humanity. The universal basis for humanity and the relation between substance and the world as reflected in Jangjae's works are thoroughly and critically examined. In addition, the role of mentalism and moral (vice and virtue) abstraction are explored as an integral component of my analysis of the essence of the human self in the general context of the development of humanity.
Finally, Jangjae is clearly conscious of the need to determine the definition of the nature of the community of humanity whose rationale lies in the substantiveness the universe.
