The main topic of this dissertation is the principles of North Korean theatre and its actual conditions since 1948, a field which has been unknown and in some cases has remained not being researched, both within and outside Korea. The first significant North Korean theatre movement arose in 1948. So-called serious plays and social realistic drama had always been a major field of interest for the North Korean artists during that period, according to the advise of their 'almighty' political leader, Il-Soog Kim. Therefore, contents of propaganda was the first important point for the performances. In the year of 1967, Jung-Il Kim, the first son of Il-Sung Kim, proclaimed North Korean doctrine for the Artistic Theory.' He and his followers believed that it provided a model for the modem North Korean theatre. So-called the movement of Theatre for Revolution was systematically conducted by different groups in order to iconise Il-Sung Kim and Jung-Il Kim.
The main areas of discussion are the following. First, the reasons why that kinds of propaganda theatre dominated North Korean stage will be traced The second area of discussion is those elements of propaganda theatre which particularly appealed to the North Korean artists. During the process of its development, the North Korean dramatists changed the original shape of social realistic drama according to their socio-cultural needs. Some North Korean dramatists created original propaganda plays which showed a strong influence from their political leaders' advise. For this reason, the third area of discussion is how the North Korean theatre artists accepted Kim's guideline. Finally, the socio-cultural and historical significance and meaning of the North Korean propaganda theatre will be examined.
