Kim, Soo-yong's literary film Mist(1967), adapting Kim, Seung-Ok's novel The Foggy Town, is a rare case dealing with the contemporariness in the 60'sKorean urban society unlike his other literary films whose backdrops used to be some old rural towns in some old days. In that sense, this film should be considered as a good example of exposing the filmmaker's perspective on the modernity and the modem subjectivity in depth and width. On condition that this film is based on the original novel and the adapter is the novelist himself, the most interesting and intriguing about this film is how the 'reflexivity' of the novel, which had been shared with most modernist novels in the 60's in terms of the protagonists' critical(-only) attitude against the modem life, was represented, or reconsidered.
The point is that Mist was not just a copy of The Foggy Town but rather a critical revision of it and this revision was achieved mainly by the intervention of the critical gaze of the camera, or the filmmaker, namely, in very filmic ways. This achievement amounts to the 'supplement' in Derrida's terms since the original ending of annihilating the short deviate experiences in Mujin, a pseudo-modem town, and returning to the modem world was undermined by some changes in narrative details and some filmic devices of looking at the protagonist: for example, the changed timing of the protagonist's voice-over statement of "let's be positive about Mujin just this once" and the suspicious framing in oblique angle of ending shots etc. In short, the film succeeded in radicalizing the novel's limited criticism against the project of modernity in the 60's Korea and the male (bourgeois) intellectual's cooperation.
