Park Tae-Won crossed over into North Korea during the Korean war, wrote“It Is Approaching to Dawn” followed by “The Peasants’ War in 1894” then became the best North Korean writer in historical fiction. “The Peasants’ War in 1894” especially hold public eyes as an excellent socialistic historical fiction along with Lee Ki-Young’s “River Dooman.” It was also considered to be the most suitable work for North Korean creative writing criteria.
Although there are limitations such as using the language from Seoul area while the spacial background of the fiction is Jun-ra area, and denial of facilitating Dong-Hak organization during the first revolt in Dong-Hak revolution from the history, yet there are various techniques and devices to show Park Tae-Won’s authorship. This means that this fiction is esthetically valuable even apart from socialistic realism.
“The Peasants’War in 1894” is also a meaningful work for examining the similar characteristic between South and North Korean literatures. The developmental progress of his literary view from modernism to socialistic realism will remain as an important self-evaluational material for our literary history, along with the fact that it was a result of the author’s suffering and recognition of the world who kept evaluated himself while undergoing the sudden change of the time.
