2010년은 5ㆍ18 30주년이 되는 해이다. 어떤 의미에서건 한국 현대사의 중요한 사건임에는 분명하고 따라서 한 세대가 경과한 이 시점에서 대상에 대한 진지한 성찰과 앞으로의 모색이 필요해 보인다. 살핀다는 의미에서 성찰은 자아와 세계를 모두 포함할 수 있지만, 문학에서는 주로 자기를 향하는 시선을 가리킬 터인데, 5ㆍ18민중항쟁 30주년이 되는 시점에서 그동안의 5ㆍ18문학의 성과와 한계를 짚어보고 이를 토대로 한국현대문학사의 중요한 일부분으로서의 5월 문학의 나아갈 방향을 모색코자 하는 의도에서 본 연구가 시작되었다. 다만 본 연구에서는 그 전체를 다 살피기에 역부족이므로 5ㆍ18기념재단이 한국작가회의 및 계간 ??문학들??과 공동으로 주관하는 5ㆍ18문학작품 공모전 당선 소설들을 중심으로 5월 문학의 최근의 변모 양상을 살펴보았다.
문학적 소통이 갖는 가장 큰 특성은 정서적 교감을 목적으로 한다는 데 있다. 정보나 사실의 전달에 만족하지 않고 그것과 관계된 인간의 정서를 타인과 소통하려는 것이 문학의 언어이다. 문학의 언어는 정서적 체험과 관련된 구체적 내용을 전달한다. 독자는 생산적 소비행위-독서를 통해 ‘지금’ 소통하고자 하는 구체적 내용과 정서를 취한다.
5ㆍ18소설들의 경우 거대한 국가 폭력에 대항해서 끝내 지켜내야 할 인간성의 옹호라는 본질적인 주제를 통해 독자와 소통해 왔다. 그것은 ‘다시 기억하기’라는 고통을 통과한 작가들의 열정의 산물로 하나의 문화적 실재이자 기억 공간이다. 기억과 재현, 그리고 계승으로서의 그동안의 5월 문학은 진실의 봉인 혹은 망각을 넘어 새로운 역사적 기억으로 번역ㆍ보존되어 가고자 하는 자체의 열망을 내재하고 있다. 다만 사회는 쉴 새 없이 변화하고, 그에 따라 문학의 영역에서의 규범 혹은 문법들도 변화해 가고 있다. 그런 의미에서 움직이는 사회, 움직이는 규범성을 포착하지 못하는 문학, 즉 움직이지 않는 문학 담론은 이미 그 사회적 존재 가치를 상실한다고 볼 수 있다. 5ㆍ18문학은 아쉽게도 자동화되고 관습적인 해석의 틀-담론에 갇혀 있다는 지적을 오래 전부터 받아왔고, 이는 관련 문학의 생산과 연구와 소비에 부정적인 영향을 끼쳐왔다.
이제 문제는, (이미 오래 전부터 제기되고 있던 까닭에 새삼스럽긴 하지만), 5ㆍ18 항쟁 30주년을 맞는 이 시점에서 다시 살펴 보건데, 5ㆍ18의 본질적 의미를 훼손하지 않는다는 조건 하에서 5월을 성찰하는 혹은 외연을 확장하는 문학적시도가 요구된다는 점이다. 그런 차원에서 살펴 본 네 편의 5ㆍ18문학작품 공모 당선 소설들은 지난 시기의 소설들과 비교할 때, 광주라는 서사 공간이 학살과 공포의 공간이라는 ‘관습화된 광주’의 의미를 넘어서고 있다는 점에서 새롭다 할 수 있겠다. 젊은 작가들의 소설들은 아예 80년 광주의 언급이 생략되어 있기도 하다. 다만 천박한 후기 자본주의 시대에 문학이 무엇을 할 수 있는가와 관련하여 민주주의와 평화를 갈망하는 모든 사람들의 소통과 연대를 통해 우리의 안팎을 넘나드는 진정성 있는 이야기로서의 5월 소설의 가능성에는 얼마간의 유보를 표할 수밖에 없다는 생각이다. 아무래도 두 편의 소설은 얼마간 낡았고, 다른 두 편의 소설은 아직 생경한 까닭인데, 그 말은 여전히 5ㆍ18소설의 새로운 가능성이 열려 있다는 의미이기도 하다.
