This paper traces the diaspora of an ancient clan unnoticed in the transmitted texts. There are more than 150 excavated or transmitted bronze vessels which contain the inscription Ji ? as a clan or polity name. Among them the provenances of 35 vessels dating from the late Shang to the Spring and Autumn period are known in the various regions throughout China. Assuming that the Ji clan of the same origin cast all the vessels, this paper examines the related oracle bone and bronze inscriptions to reconstruct the history of the clan for about 800 years.
The pro-Shang Ji polity developed dual bases in the royal domain and southwestern Shanxi during the late Shang, playing important roles in the royal affairs of Shang. However, after the Zhou conquest of Shang in about 1045 B.C., the Zhou forced to emigrate the Ji people to the diverse regions where its new power bases, feudal states, were established. Among the many scattered Ji groups, the ones in the vicinities of Beijing settled down in the area for a certain period possibly under the support of Yan 燕, the Zhou representative in the region.
From the mid Western Zhou period, the Ji related vessels are discovered mostly in Shandong, suggesting the migration of the Ji people to the new region. This change happened with the disappearance of Yan both from the archaeological and textual records. The Ji people seem to have relied on the new patron, Lai 萊(釐), the strongest power of eastern Shandong, for their new haven. Some transmitted inscriptions at the same time further show that another branch of the Ji clan, Jibo ?伯 and Jizhong ?仲, played important roles as a noble family in the royal domain. They might be a descendant of the Ji people who migrated to the various regions after the Zhou conquest.
Despite the new development of the Ji clan from the mid to late Western Zhou especially through marriages with the mainstream Zhou, the rise of Qi 齊 as a hegemonic power all over China in the Spring and Autumn period eventually conquered Lai and many other polities in eastern Shandong. The 800 years history of the Ji clan seems to have come to an end with the conquest thereafter.
