The purpose of this paper is to examine the ecological vision in Faulkner's The Bear. Ecological thinking is identified here as a fundamental change in human's binary way of thinking through the reformation of the dichotomy between man and nature, and of its social relations.
The Bear reveals ecological vision in two phases. Firstly, Ike(the main character) shows several ecological vision through bear-hunting scenes in the wilderness; 1) nature is far beyond human's reasoning and logic, 2) man is only a small part of nature, 3) all life on earth have intrinsic value in themselves 4) all things are interconnected and interdependent as a whole being. Next, Ike proposes the mutual and symbiotic ecological values by relinquishment of property. He embodies this vision by reflecting on possession-domination relationship within land ownership and the slavery system in the South, which is based on the conflict between subject and object in the Western society.
Faulkner explores full of ecological vision here, however, he still seems to be stuck on the dilemma between nature and culture, that is, between 'Mother Nature'(having intrinsic value regardless of human interests) and 'Virgin Land'(existing for human well-being), which every American writers had had since 19th century.
Consequently, The Bear has an open ending; whether or not it ends with happy ecological vision depends on the readers. However, it would be said that the text with open ending like The Bear is a better ecological text than a crude environmental slogan in making the reader re-describe his own life through diverse aspects of human life.
