Oh Gyoo-won is a poet who shows positive pursuit of poetic methodology in the space of Korean modern poetry. If the important aspect of aesthetic modernity in Korean modern poetry is a matter of sharp poetic consciousness of the language of poetry itself, Oh Gyoo-won is evaluated as a poet who has ceaselessly explored the methodology at the vanguard. What has not been deeply discussed when discussing the modernity or aesthetic modernity of Oh Gyoo-won’s poetry is the urban sentiments and a matter of image in his poetry. He pushed forward vigorously with ‘breaking away from ideology’ and pursued ‘poetics of transparency’ and this can be confirmed through his poetics. An important matter of poetic methodology in the course of his pushing forward with the poetics of breaking away from ideology was to discover the realistic sense of image of things. Particularly, he is a poet who showed the generation of the sense of the language in the images of urban space. The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the iconography of urban images appeared in Oh Gyoo-won’s poetry. The reason that urban images are important in Oh Gyoo-won’s poetry is that urban images have the meaning as a phenomenon of things that discover new sentiments and the language. He is a poet who pushed forward with the pursuit of urban language including the experience of urban life symbolized by ‘ways’ and ‘advertisement language’. It had the meaning of introspective reflection on the urban modernity.
If the question of modernity in literature is related to ‘modernistic attitude’, this is implicated in the question of modernistic symbolization of modernistic space. Urban individuals try to secure aesthetic and reflective attitude toward urban landscape and life and these efforts are destroying individualization and, at the same time ironically, are not free from urban magical powers. The core of aesthetic question is to discover different sentiments in the urban space and to exclusively possess the possibility of different life literarily. If the distribution and redistribution of times and spaces and visible things and invisible things are the division of sentiments, what Oh Gyoo-won’s poetry shows is the new method of division of senses. What Oh Gyoo-won attempted to generate in the urban space was to reconstruct urban images as transparent phenomena from the discovery of urban senses. His poetry was to preserve the independence of urban images and to critically reconstruct the senses of advertisement language and through this, pursued the self-regulation of the poetic language corresponding to urban fetishism. Ultimately it meant constructing the iconography of urban images and then the poetic adventure of deconstructing it again. It can be called the invention of poetic senses of urban areas and can be evaluated as showing aesthetic modernity as critical pursuit of urban modernity.
