The purpose of this article is to inquire into the relationship between church and state in American history from the seventeenth century to the nineteenth century.
In the seventeenth century, American Puritans closely connected their unique piety, covenant theology and thoughts of social contract with political logic. This religious and moral tradition of the Puritans contributed to the making of the political and social values of American society.
In the eighteenth century, with the First Great Awakening, most immigrants and settlers identified themselves as American. This identity was a basis for the American Revolution. Especially during the American Revolution, churches performed an important role to infuse patriotism into the hearts of people. In addition, churches laid the groundwork for a public democracy.
Through the Second Great Awakening, American churches in the nineteenth century created a new religious culture, promoting human rights and addressing the issue of slavery to the public. That is, churches did not avoid their moral responsibility for social justice, although there were limitations under the condition of the separation of church and state.
Therefore, throughout American history, churches have played an important role in the development of the state, the foundation of democracy, and the promotion of human rights, while balancing interaction with and distance from the state.
