The Queen's Diamond Necklace Affair, which to some contemporaries like Lenoir, ex-Lieutenant general de police of Paris, was a cause of the French Revolution, provides us with an entrance to the society of the Ancient Regime. It reveals to us not only the ways in which the society functions, but also the cultural changes, which, though unnoticeable around the middle of the 18th century, came to be an important factor just before the French Revolution. For example, the change of the King's or Queen's representation took place before the fall of the French monarchy. Marie-Antoinette was represented with the body of a prostitute Marie Nicole Le Guay (metamorphosed into the baronne d'Oliva), and her name was stolen by a fake Comtesse de La Motte who once signed "Marie Antoinette de France de Saint Remy de Valois" on the memoir submitted to Madame Dubarry, and the queen herself became the symbol of the Necklace Affair, even though she was its foremost victim. This affair represents the crossroad at which the traditional culture of the absolute monarchy was undergoing transformation and the new culture was being born. There various media - oral, written and/or printed - had influence over those who wanted some changes. The affair tells us, through the activities of the criminals and the eyewitnesses, about the crisis of the value system of the hierarchical society, which was precipitated by the commercialized written and printed matter.
