Dongrae(present-day Busan) had been a center of foreign relations between Korea and Japan during 17th~19th centuries. A receiving for Japanese envoy was an important duty of head official of Dongrae-bu. The character of Dongrae as a center of exchange between Korea and Japan is well reflected in pictures. Three paintings that head official of Dongrae-bu is receiving Japanese envoy have been handed down to the present. Out of three, the first which got academic attention is a work attributed to Jeongseon. The painting is housed in National Museum of Korea. Another painting that National Museum of Korea had possessed is owned in Jinju National Nuseum now. The other is housed in Tokyo National Museum of Japan.
These paintings depicted the major landscape of Dongrae as a panoramic view. They had been painted after 1813. The painting of Tokyo National Museum was painted the latest. The ground that the painting time is estimated after 1813 is the location of Dongrae hyanggyo(鄕校). Hyanggyo moved into the west outside Dongrae castle in 1813.
Three paintings had been originally owned by Tsukahara Ryutaro, Suzuki Keijiro, and Ogura Takenosuke respectively. Tsukahara was a minor official of the Japanese Government General of Korea, Suzuki was a man of property, and Ogura was a representative capitalist in Daegu.
They had circulated in the various forms of postcards, art books, popular books, photo exhibitions, etc. by the introduction of photography and the development of modern printing. The painting of National Museum of Korea only spreaded according to presently confirmed materials.
The major scene of these paintings is the one that head official of Dongrae-bu is giving a banquet for Japanese envoys, especially the ones who were dispatched regularly. As foreign relations at the national level had been weakened, diplomatic relations at the local level became gradually important. There was a more urgent need to reestablish relations between Korea and Japan. It seems that these paintings show the change of diplomatic relations in 19th century.
