This paper investigates various concepts related to the notion of nation such as nationalism, national literature and nation-state and takes a general view of the historical flow of German nationalism and national literature from Walther von der Vogelweide, the first patriotic poet of Germany, in the medieval ages, through F. G. Klopstock, J. G. Herder and J. G. Fichte to the time of the first unified nation-state of Germany in 1871. Subsequently, focusing on Arminius, who has been embossed as the symbolic figure of German nationalism during these times, we have surveyed the issues of historical and literary reception from the Roman historian, Tacitus to the German poet, Heine. From this survey, we can understand a historical change of the figure of Arminius who sometimes has been praised as the model of German national hero overcoming troubles between German nations as well as Roman oppression and sometimes cursed as the representative of German outrage (furor teutonicus) and barbarism. In consequence, it can be noted that literary reception issues of Arminius come to be related with the German nationalism and literary men generally try to emboss the main character as a central theme of German literature in their literary work which deals with Arminius as a material. However, it has been argued that reconsiderations and revisions of various concepts and imaginations in the history of reception are necessary, because the evaluations of Arminius mostly depend on conjectures and it is difficult to recognize his political nature. In addition, we have tried to promote the understanding of Kleist's nationalism by considering Die Hermannsschlacht, which has received contrary evaluations as the memorial work of German national literature or as the expression of Kleist's insanity. Also, we have looked into the contributions of this drama which can be called political tendency play (Tendenzdrama) dealing with Arminius and the poetry of contemporary nationalism poets including Kleist to the Prussia's growth for the unified nation with strong national consciousness. In particular, since Kleist's creative activities adopted to meet the needs of the time were under the sign of nationalism in the latter half of his short lifetime, his Die Hermannsschlacht has supplied proper arguments for the discussion about the relations between the nationalism and literature.
