The Italian sonnet has a long history since its beginnings 800 years ago and it has greatly influenced Western poetry in the history of literature. In this paper, I have examined the Italian sonnet from its birth to completion, considering various social and literary milieus in Italy, as well as literary themes and forms.
This study focuses on the Sicilian School, which is the first Italian literary circle, and also explores sonnets by such poets as lacopo da Lentini, The 'Dolce stil novo', Guido Guinizelli, Dante Alighieri, and Francesco Petrarca. As a result, the relationship between wandering minstrels in Provence and the Sicilian School is understood, and it is affirmed that da Lentini was the first one who wrote sonnets in about 1241.
In the early period, canzoni were written frequently in Sicilia under the influence of Provence culture. However, great changes in literary themes and forms took place since sonnets began to be written. In its early form, sonnets' themes, which was usually love, and sonnets' forms with end rhymes changed in the hands of Guinizelli and Dante; after 130 years, they were completed by Petrarca e his Canzoniere in terms of form as well as in its meaning.
The sonnet is made up of 14 lines, and each line is 11 syllabic verse (endecasillabo). Fourteen lines of a sonnet are divided into the fronte and the sirma: the fronte consists of the first 8 lines with rhymes (A, B) and the sirma consists of the latter 6 lines with rhymes(C, D or C, D, E). Petrarca's favorite themes and poetic forms, and even poetic dictions, became very popular and influential at the time; thus, a new word "Petrarchismo" was coined.
Petrarca, who was the first Italian lyrical poet and also the first humanist in Italy, was greatly concerned with humanism. After all, it was through the form of sonnet that Petrarca could not only delineate his lyrical vision, which is full of individual feelings and artistic enthusiasm as manifested in Canzoniere, but also demonstrate his humanitarian ideas.
