This study is aimed at the research on the ideology of the Society of the Drama Art and the characteristics of its performance. revealing that it had had an great effect on the Korean modern drama. The Society of the Drama Art was founded by the Korean students studying in Tokyo. Seemingly its members shared the knowledge of modern drama and discussed the plays they had watched there. but actually they tried to find the way to enlarge their independent ability. They thought plays are very effective in the enlightenment of people and they wanted to perform the westernstyle modern drama rather than Shinpaguk.
In 1921 the Society of the Drama Art took the local performance across the nation supported by the DongA Daily Newspaper. resulting in making the structure that the Maeil Newspaper is imperialism and it is Sinpaguk, while the DongA Daily Newspaper is nationalism and it is Singuk. Also its performance provided the momentum for the social drama's being the center in the Korean modern drama. The Society of the Drama Art performed the Naturalism drama and Symbolism drama at the same time. in order to find out which is more suitable for the colonized Korea. They finally made sure that the National drama is more fitting in its performance in their road shows.
The Society of the Drama Art despised the Sinpaguk because of its enlightened characteristic and the unmodern viewpoint. It also denied the Korean traditional drama and Sinpaguk. Instead they accepted the western modern drama and tried to make it suitable for the colonized Korea. As a result it naturally followed that its perception of modern times accepted the modern awareness which western modern play had. which made it difficult for the Society of the Drama Art to communicate with the Korean audience in the colonized Korea. Though the Society of the Drama Art had the intention to escape from the unmodern Korean situation. it came to have the limitation that it couldn't but to have another colonization. This limit became an important problem which modern Korean drama had to solve.
