The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the speed of walking exercise on body composition, blood lipid profiles and insulin resistance in obese men. 24 obese men(35∼45yrs) were assigned to one of three groups that low speed group(LSG, n=7, 3.5∼4㎞/h), moderate speed group(MSG, n=9, 5∼5.5㎞/h) and high speed group(HSG, n=8, 6∼7㎞/h) performed for 50 minutes/time(included warm-up and cooling-down each 5 minutes) and 4 times/week for 8 weeks. Variables of body composition, blood lipid profiles and insulin resistance were measured and compared between groups as well as pre- and post-training using 2-way ANOVA with repeated measure. Main results were as follows: 1) Body weight, %fat and body fat decreased significantly in MSG and HSG. Waist-hip ratio decreased significantly in HSG. 2) TC, TG and AI decreased significantly in MSG and HSG. LDL-C decreased significantly in LSG, MSG and HSG but HDL-C tended to increase. 3) There was no significant changes found in variables regarding insulin resistance in all group but blood glucose, insulin and HOMA-IR tended to decrease, HOMA-IS tended to increase. In conclusion, the current findings of this study indicate that a moderate-speed walking(more than 5.5㎞/h) may have a greater efficacy as a means to treat body composition, blood lipid profiles and insulin resistance in obese men than low-sped walking(less than 4㎞/h).
