Environmental history does not appear to be a unified historical discipline. Every environmental historians seem to have his or her own vision of the environmental history. Yet among the varieties of environmental history, historical research centering on the ideas of nature and natural objects dominated during the 1970s and 1980s. Donald Worster and Carolyn Merchant could be counted as the representatives of historians within this group of historians of ideas. They left an indelible trance on the environmental history through their works revealing the historical context of many ecological ideas such as the equilibrium of nature, ecological community, ecosystem, or the femininity of nature.
Under the influence of new cultural history, William Cronon and Richard White added new perceptiveness on the intellectual environmental history through their challenges on some of the most cherished environmental ideas traditionally taken for granted, such as the ideas on the concepts of nature, ecology, and wilderness. During the 1990s, this new breed of cultural environmental historians tried to develop a new models and new language to describe the relationship between the human beings and their natural environment largely under the common recognition on the inseparability between man and nature.
Since the turn of the century, environmental history strongly emphasizing material reality of human environment has emerged as the most notable tendency in environmental history. Impact of natural environment such as cold weather or El nino must be not only interesting but also important historical ingredients so far unjustifiably neglected. Yet historical narrative centering around the natural phenomena could cause serious misreading among the readers and interpreters. Historians should pay more attention to the fact that science is not a unified field of study, and scientific researches have had their own historical contexts.
