This paper aims to explore the transgressive girls" desire for foot(wear) and the patriarchal suppression of it in the fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen. Karen of "The Red Shoes" and Inger of "The Girl Who Trod on the Loaf" values their beautiful new (red) shoes above their moral and religious duties. The title heroine of "The Little Mermaid" longs for legs to achieve the prince"s love and an immortal soul. They should be punished and sacrificed not just for their "vanity and pride," but for their transgression of the forced feminine norms, such as modesty, devotion, silence, and obedience.
The imprudent girls" salvation only comes from their sincere penitence and endless atonement. Karen should amputate her ankles, Ingre repent in the hell, and the little mermaid forfeit her life, dissolving into foam. It is their adjustment under compulsion, however, which makes readers feel uncomfortable and cast doubts on the justice of the redemption. The harsh punishment in Andersen"s admonishing stories (un)consciously reveals the fear for the girls" subversive nonconformity to the patriarchal power structure. The (red) shoes of the girls, handed down to the modern feminist writers such as Margaret Atwood and Anne Saxton, are the sign of the violent patriarchal domination and girls" desire to overcome it.
