The history of contacts and intercourse between Korea, Southeast Asia and India is to bo understood as having been unfolded in the Asian world which encompasses not only North- and Southeast Asia, but the region of the Indian Ocean, too. The understanding of Asian history and culture in Korea has been conventionally focused on the political order and cultural structure of the Mainland Asia. The study of political, economical and cultural relations in Asia, based on such a point of view, has been thus generally limited to relationships between Korea and China, China and Japan, or Korea and Japan, rarely expanded to include Southeast Asia and India.
The whole Asia encompassing view point of the history of intercourse in Asia seems to be especially important for the understanding Southeast Asia. Southeast Asia, lying geographically between Northeast Aisa and South- and Southwest Asia, acted as stepping stones for the East-West trade and exchanges. Peoples not only from Northeast Asian countries, but also Indians, Persians, Arbs and Europeans, came to Southeast Asia or passed by for, above all, commercial or religious purposes, thereby also contributing to the cultural diversity of the region.
This paper which examines the maritime intercourse between Korea, Southeast Asia and India until the 8th century deals with the following subjects: the possibility of maritime intercourse between the Korean Peninsula and Southeast Asia and India in the prehistorical times; the possibility of intercourse between Korea and India in the first century A.D., based on the story of the Indian princess Heo Hwang-ok who came to the Korean kingdom of Garak; the question around the possibility of contacts between Southeast Asia and an ancient Korean kingdom Baekje in the 6the and 7th centuries; the pilgrimage of Korean Buddhist monks to India via Southeast Asia in the 7th and 8th centuries.
