This essay explores the relation between historical fact and imagination at first, and then examines the plays of Brian Friel and Oh Tae-Seok. Friel and Oh Tae-Seok are not claiming historical accuracy, but are engaged in a kind of theatrical metahistory: their plays are meditations on the nature of history, and its relation to the present. This enables us to understand both their historical discussion about making history and their own process of making history in their plays and see how their historical drama enacts issues addressed by Hayden White.
History is made in two ways: first, by the men of action in the public world and, second, by the chroniclers and interpreters. What Friel and Oh Tae-Seok emphasize is that there is no such thing as History, only histories. As a result, they assert the distortions to which the truth is subject especially when the language that is used to frame it is in the hands of politicians, mythmakers, historian and writers.
