We live according to the flow of time. In the morning we get up and have nine-to-five at the office, then come back home, and go to bed at night. We do these things repeatedly almost everyday. Therefore we are accustomed to think about something in accordance with the flow of time. This way of our thinking is right and natural.
But if we think about everything only in this way, it might be difficult to recognize the reality totally and comprehensively. Because once we look around things as they are, not in context with the flow of time but from the view of the right now, there would be as many splendid things as they are. The strong lions and the weak deer coexist, even if lions attack deer. Fire and water are mutually exclusive, but we use both of them in order to lead our life. And many innumerable things seem to be irrelevant one another, but they coexist on
the earth like components of one family.
Briefly speaking, everything on earth is dominated by the same principle such as the gravitational force. And many uncountable things exist in their own ways, so it might be said that they are connected one another by the invisible Hand like Laotzu’s great net: (天網恢恢 疏而不失 ― 老子). From that point, Dylan Thomas realized that everything is a member of one family. The great zen priest Hyobong (曉峰禪師) also mentioned in his poetry that all things alive help one another like one family. For example, the deer can be seen as a prey of lion in order to keep lion alive, not as the law of jungle. Therefore we can realize the reality as a very mysterious and wonderful world of harmony as it is by the integrated view on the present.
