One noticeable trend in Ming-Qing studies during the 2010~2011 period is that papers focusing on international relations outnumbered other subjects, which can be attributed implicitly to the contemporary view of Sino-Korean relations by Korean scholars. Many papers can be found that deal with a variety of socio-economic or political issues. Of particular interest is that many papers are concerned with medical history, climate history, or environmental history, which have not attracted many scholars until now. It is also interesting to note that many papers on art history were published during the same period.
Despite such remarkable achievements in Ming-Qing research, a few issues remain as topics worthy of in-depth discussion among researchers. First and foremost, more discussion is needed on the legitimacy of the traditional view of treating the Ming-Qing age as one period: I believe treating the Ming and the Qing dynasties in a separate way might give us a better understanding of the relevant history. Second, despite the necessity of international relations studies, international relations researchers should place greater emphasis on the study of fundamental issues. Finally, it would be desirable to broaden our views through studies on comparative history. Only with such endeavors can we truly and clearly understand the implications of Ming-Qing history within the history of China as a whole.
