In Korean history, the B.C. period refers to the Primitive Age including the Paleolithic and Neolithic Age and so-called Early States of Gojoseon(古朝鮮), Buyeo(扶餘), Goguryeo(高句麗), Okjeo(沃沮), Dongye(東濊) and Samhan(三韓). Among them, Gojoseon was the only country existed purely during the B.C. period, while others including Buyeo and Samhan remained their state systems for a certain period of time in the A.D. period.
Although Gojoseon and Buyeo developed to the level of ancient state as the first political bodies in Korea, they remained the state systems through the confederation of local communities because of their strong identity. Such historic fact is a part of the ancient Korean history and can be regarded as ’early ancient history’ with its relevance to the ancient Korean history from a large perspective.
Researchers divide the historic period to date since the state-building in various ways. The period is typically divided into the ancient-medieval-modem era, but sometimes commonly divided by dynasty. Otherwise, it is divided by the combination of the ways mentioned above. The prime example is the Gojoseon-Three Kingdoms-North South States (United Silla and Balhae) period, divided the ‘ancient’ era again by dynasty.
