This paper discusses application of sight translation as a education tool for simultaneous interpretation. Sight translation is to read written sentences and translate them orally at a normal speed from the beginning to the end. Therefore, if this is applied to interpretation, it acquires characteristics of simultaneous interpretation since written texts are substituted with vocal sounds. Main objective of this paper is to enhance simultaneous interpretation capabilities of learners by applying sight translation, which is used to practice simultaneous interpretation, to interpretation education.
First of all, in order to understand effects of sight translation as a tool to practice interpretation, its status in curriculums of graduation schools of interpretation and translation across the nation and preceding studies have been researched, and on the basis that sight translation is an oral speech act through which written texts are read and translated verbally, this paper places an emphasis on similarities with simultaneous interpretation and analyzes effects of sight translation as a tool to practice simultaneous interpretation. As an analysis method, error types of learners are subdivided into two categories of vocabulary and grammar, and respective characteristics are examined. On the contrary to listening-oriented interpretation, sight translation is prone to become more translational. This paper concludes that if learners bear interpretation in mind and pay heed to improving their performance speed and agility, outcomes of interpretation education can be maximized on the basis of the complementary relation between translation and interpretation.
