The purposes of this paper are twofold. The first purpose of this paper is to investigate the theoretical factors which contribute to the procedural meanings of English that. The second purpose is to provide the procedural meanings of its corresponding expressions in Korean, which include ‘ku’, ‘kuket’, and ‘kesiki’, and additionally the meaning differences among the expressions. The notions of joint attention, the accessibility of referents, the focus schema, etc. are argued to contribute to the procedural meanings for English that and its Korean equivalents. The difference between ‘ku’ and ‘kuket’ is compared with the notions of focus schema and the hierarchy of cognitive status. On the other hand, the differences between ‘kuket’ and ‘kesiki’ are discussed with the notion of ‘focus schema’ based on ‘definiteness’ and ‘reference’.
