The purpose of this study was investigate mothers" expectation level and actual teaching level of children"s reading and writing by age. The subjects were 1,225 mothers of 3~5 year old children attending kindergartens and child care centers through out Korea. Data were collected by using questionnaires. Study results indicate different patterns of mothers" expectation level, and actual teaching level by children"s age. Parents of 3 year old children showed several peak expectation levels and actual teaching levels. Expectation and teaching levels for 4 year old children were sharply increased and those for 5 year old children closely met levels of contents of curriculum for the first and second grades of primary school related to reading and writing. Results of the study can help reduce conflicts between educational practice related to literacy in early childhood education institutes and at home by a providing basic understanding of aspects, patterns, and levels of parents" requests to teachers regarding the literacy development of young children.
