Motivated by rapid development of information and communication technology in recent years, this study empirically analyses the characteristics of telecommuters who work from home, based upon 7,072 sample data derived from 2009 national survey on daily activities and time allocation in Korea. The effects of residents" demographic and socioeconomic characteristics as well as urban and residential environment on home working are estimated in two ways: First, multinominal and binary logit models are employed to estimate the odds ratio of choosing to work exclusively from home, work both inside and outside home, or commute exclusively to workplace outside home. Second, Tobit and multiple regression models are applied to estimate the effect on the amount of time allocated to home working. Both estimation results demonstrate that occupation is the most important determinant of home working: Professionals with expert knowledge as well as independent businessman are the strongest candidate for home working, while managers, sales workers, office workers as well as employers have a propensity to telecommute too. This implies that today"s telecommuters have a characteristic of professional work force, not marginal work force which has traditionally been represented by women with preschool children. It is also found that single and couple households are not necessarily inclined to telecommute, while the substitute relationship between telecommuting and commuting is still valid and home working requires larger residential space.
