Objectives：We investigated the knowledge of psychiatric medications and referral patterns of school counselors for students with psychiatric problems.
Methods：A total of 246 school counselors recruited in 2012 completed a survey to assess their knowledge of psychiatric medications and experience in making referrals for students with mental health problems. The survey included sociodemographic data and a 5-item questionnaire on psychiatric medications.
Results：Elementary school counselors made significantly fewer psychiatric referrals than did middle and high school counselors. School counselors who had previous experience to contact the mentally ill were more likely to recommend psychiatric treatment. Higher frequency of referral experience by school counselors was significantly associated with greater acceptance of the referral by students. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that previous experience to contact the mentally ill and knowledge of psychiatric medications were independently associated with frequency of psychiatric referral. Internal barriers to psychiatric referral were associated with school counselors’ lack of knowledge about psychiatric medications.
Conclusion：Our findings suggest that knowledge of psychiatric treatment and the subjective experience of school counsellors are associated with the frequency of psychiatric referrals for students with mental health problems. Programs targeting school counsellors that focus on these issues are required to increase psychiatric referrals in schools.
