This study proposed an integrative model of exercise behavior older adults. This model postulates that individuals` exercise behaviors continuously progress from intention to action and to maintenance stage under influence of cognitive and behavioral processes. Social-cognitive variables(self-efficacy, attitude, group conformity are assumed as being important to promote exercise intention or action stage. The integrative model of exercise behavior has been investigated in a sample of 533 older adults (171 males and 362 females) in Korea. After assessing social-cognitive variables and intention, exercise behaviors and process of change were measured on two occasions: 3 month later and 6 month later. The structural equation modeling revealed adequate fit of the hypothetical model of exercise behavior. All hypothesized paths indicating causal relationships among constructs in the model were significant. However, it was found than attitude did not strongly predict intention, and self-efficacy predicted action less strongly than intention. Predictive powers of cognitive-behavioral processes on action and maintenance were not strong. Furthermore, there were significant gender differences in predictive powers of structural variables in the model. Male tended were likely to use cognitive processes, while female tended to use behavioral processes over exercise stages. These results offer a clearer understanding of the dynamics of exercise intention and behavior, involving various social-cognitive constructs and processes.
