This paper examines Luther s view of humanity in terms of his two kingdoms doctrine. The paper argues that Luther`s two-kingdoms doctrine is an adequate basis for formulating the relationship between personal ethics and the societal common good. What does Luther`s two kingdoms doctrine say about? It gives a theological interpretation on the responsibility of the gospel in connection to the world. Luther has been accused of promoting quietism and personal piety, and of encouraging the status quo at the expense of social change. Critics of Luther such as Troeltsch, Niebuhr, Barth, Moltmann, and others claimed that Luther`s two-kingdoms doctrine encouraged Christian detachment from temporal affairs. Luther`s critics maintained that Luther`s two kingdoms theology gave worldly rulers excessive authority by legitimating a separation of public and private morality. This paper argues that Luthers thought resists these criticisms. On the contrary, when the two-kingdoms doctrine is interpreted in terms of Luther`s stress on love of neighbor, the tension between the complexities of social ethics and personal piety is significantly eased. While taking into account contemporary critics of Luther, the paper demonstrates the historical-theological basis of Christian social ethics rooted in Luther`s two kingdoms doctrine.
