Korean-Chinese (Chaoxianzu: 朝鮮族) used to be considered as foreigners or immigrants in Chinese society, but after the founding of the Peoples` Republic of China, they were bestowed new status as one of ethnic groups in China. Korean-Chinese have been building their unique identity in various ways under the influences of political and social changes. In particular, education is one of the major factors in the construction of Korean-Chinese identity. For Korean- Chinese, education not only consciousness raising for discovering ethnic identity, but also a process of ``making citizens`` conducted by the state. Thus, Korean-Chinese School is the arena which highlights the principles of both the state (China) and ethnic group (Korean- Chinese). ``Making citizens`` by State and ``ethnic identity`` of Korean- Chinese sometimes coexist and sometimes compete with each other in Korean-Chinese School. Korean-Chinese School affects the process of Korean-Chinese identity construction, and the influence is composition of dynamic factors of socio-cultural contents. This study examines the relation of ``state`` and ``ethnic`` in China with a focus on Korean-Chinese School. This thesis demonstrates how the members of Korean-Chinese School deals with official education and position themselves in the Chinese society. The students and teachers of Korean-Chinese School do not merely accept the official content of education, but modify or resist against it in various ways in everyday life. The relation of ``state-ethnic`` through the scope of Korean- chinese school is not always contradict but is articulated flexibly through Korean-Chinese Identity formation. Korean-Chinese show the relation of ``state-ethnic`` as competition neither as logic of subversion nor emancipation. The relation of ``state`` and ``ethnic`` is not a dichotomy between two different things. It is an issue of ``process`` that is affected by complex of various values, Chinese society, and socio-cultural context. In doing so, this ``process`` reveals diverse aspects of identity formation of Korean-Chinese.
