Articulation is not a familiar word in Korea to be used for Japanese education so far. Of course there are terms that are similar in meaning. However, the conception of “connection” is a term to bring together high schools, universities, and the society, and by actually performing out the “connection” will give significance to this research about articulation.
“Achievement Evaluation” system was introduced in high school education last year. From the introduction of this evaluation, students learned to “do” something than to “know” something, and they were evaluated with how much achievement they performed. This indeed, can be seen as a process to match up with articulation. It is highly idealistic that students learn basic Japanese in high school, and as they move on to university education, begin in earnest to learn Japanese. Nothing can be perfect, and it also has some problems to move on. The popularity of Japanese is keep on dropping, in a stalemate. To overcome this, articulation based on “achievement” is highly needed. Leading both high school teachers and university professors come together closely to collaboratively work on the research; this is articulation. Also, not only in high school and universities but articulation is important in societies as well. It is time to listen to the needs of learners, not teaching primarily basic Japanese usage or knowledge. In able to allow people to know Japanese well enough to cope in societies, articulation will surely become more in need. The importance of articulation in actual high schools are informed through J-GAP activities, and little by little the achievements are showing. The connection with universities is also an assignment from now on, but it certainly will bear fruit in the near future. Not all achievement from articulation can be shown in one time. Bottom line, as long as it can be understood that it is in a process about to reach the goal would be fine. A bridge between high school, education department, university, and society, articulation should be an ongoing research for future Japanese education.
