This study will suggest details of Japan’s establishment of senior care institution specialized for the hearing-impaired and their development of program considering hearing-impaired seniors. This research and investigation instigated visits to hearing-impaired elderly welfare institutions in Osaka (Asukunosato) and Fukuoka (Tajirien) and held interviews with the managers of the institutions. The content of the study, ‘the establishment and management of the hearing impaired senior care center’, required Grounded Theory method in order to effectively explain the process of understanding professionals’ approaches to the subject matter.As a result of the method, 94 concepts, 41 subcategories, and 16 categories were found.
The purpose of the study is to advise few aspects in order to establish a well programmed and beneficial senior care center specializing on disabilities in Korea.
First, to improve the policy that supports the disabled, it is necessary to understand the aging phenomenon, the type of disability, and the occurrence time of disability.
Second, Korea is currently providing sign language education for two colleges and for the hearing-impaired association. Popularizing sign language education will solve the hearing-impaired seniors’ needs of communicating with the society.
Finally, the associations should strengthen itself by encouraging people to speak up for the disabled, and initiating movements to improve the awareness of the disabled in Korea’s society.
