The new studies of Cold War history in Germany have continued to evolve over the last two decades. They have not confined itself to the narrow discussion on the German policy of Soviet Union in the early years of the Cold War. They have extended, to a greater degree, to the perspective of Cold War Studies which takes a look into the European context and global interdependence. The German exponents of the recent trends of historical research on the Cold War as Wilfried Loth, Bernd Stover, the Manheim project "Ostpolitik and CSCE in Europe" and the Cold War project of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research have freed themselves form both the ideological historiography and the nation-centered Cold War Studies.
In particular the Hamburg Cold War project, leaded by Bernd Greiner, has attempted to overcome the Euro-centric narrative of the Cold War and to develop new topics, methods and paths for the Cold War history. Under its various study results, the perception into the fear which Loth has also paid great attention to, has attracted attention. For the innovative research of the Cold War one should more try to understand the function and effect of the hostile image of enemy in the social culture and every day life. The elucidation of the wider interdependence of the Cold War as global epoche and the insight into its social cultural depths could provide the foundation of the historical perspective and political consideration for a post-Cold War and post-division society in Korea.
