The purpose of this study (n = 135) was two-fold: 1) to analyze the properties of the degree adverbs ‘aju, maeu, neomu,’ focusing on their relations with co-occurring nouns or verbs, and 2) to investigate the participants" perceptions on the usage of the degree adverbs. The chosen three adverbs share very similar meaning with one another on the use of the three adverbs in sentences. Due to the similarity, L2 learners would often show overgeneralization or frequent errors in using them selectively. For data collection, the participants at three different levels of learning Korean as L2 were given a survey questionnaire with 15 items asking them to select an appropriate one of the adverbs to complete each sentence. The analysis of the data showed some results that the participants often selected inappropriate adverbs in using the “aju, maeu, neomu’, implying L2 use errors. It was interesting that the error patterns were different among the participants depending their L2 proficiency levels. At the end of this study, some implications for teaching and learning Korean as L2 are discussed.
