This study analyzed the determinants of profitability of overseas bank subsidiaries of South Korea and China and compared the differences between them. For this purpose, this study analyzed the data on the overseas subsidiaries of both groups from 2000 through 2012.
As a result of the analysis, the overseas subsidiaries of Korean bank had higher profitability when their ratios of BIS, allowance for bad debts and net loans were lower, their net interest margins were higher and they entered a country at a relatively lower level of economic development. In contrast, the overseas subsidiaries of Chinese bank had higher profitability as their BIS ratio and loan interest margin were higher and their size was larger.
