Previous studies on the vowel devoicing phenomenon in Korean have been carried out based on the assumption that the segmental environment of the phenomenon in Korean is quite similar to that of Japanese. The purpose of the present study is examining the segmental and prosodic environment of the vowel devoicing phenomenon in Korean. The database was recorded from a female native speaker of Korean. She read 320 sentences, composed of 3762 Eujols. The underlying segment of the devoiced vowels were normally high vowels in Korean(/ㅡ,ㅣ,ㅜ/) except a few cases. The vowel were devoiced when the proceeding consonant has either the [+sibilant) or [+aspirated) feature and the following consonants were produced with oral closure regardless of their voice type. One interesting thing which had not been examined in the previous studies, was that the vowel devoicing phenomenon was frequently examined when the following consonant is either a nasal or a tap. As for the prosodic environment, the devoiced vowels were observed frequently at the Intonational Phrase initial or Accentual Phrase initial position. However, the vowel devoicing phenomenon was not examined at the utterance intial position, which is supposed to be the strongest position. The devoiced vowels were not found at the Intonational Phrase finial position different form Japanese.
