This study observes text reading comprehension of academic purpose Korean learners, and examines how they utilize multiple texts while reading a text. Multiple texts mean integrating several texts that are related each other. First of all, this paper divides multiple texts into six categories based on their purposes: vocabulary check, concept check, context comprehension, understanding the topic, understanding the thesis, and opinion expansion. Then, an experiment was conducted with twenty-five academic purpose Korean learners. Each of the participants was given texts and asked to write a journal about what types of multiple texts they had utilized when reading the text. The researcher of the experiment was able to find out why, when, and what types of multiple texts the participants used. The utilization patterns of multiple texts were different according to a text theme and the participants’ reading competence. This paper analyzed the result of the experiment and discussed how it can be applied to Korean reading teaching for academic purposes.
