Recent research on request speech act of Korean have focused merely on the request strategy rather than the expressions itself or reactions toward the request. This study, however, has investigated how Korean native speakers (KNS) and non-native speakers of Korean (NNS) think of NNS`` requesting expressions. It focuses on the differences between KNS and NNS depending on six variables; types of request, social status, intimacy, official/private context, experience of residence in Korea). According to the research, NNS expected that KNS reactions will be more negative and request will be less accepted if the request is related to the speaker, NNS’ rights or the speaker is a tourist who does not reside in Korea. But, in intimate relationship, NNS expected that KNS reactions will be more positive than KNS’ actual response. Overall, NNS showed careful attitude, expecting KNS’ reaction to be more negative than the reality, and tried to prevent making any mistakes. However, they seemed to overestimate the power of intimacy or certain polite grammar expressions and to show misunderstanding in Korean culture.
