Frontier as a highly interactive hybrid space is rising as a hot keyword in history and political science studies. By reversing the perspective from the core to the periphery, i. e. frontier, I revisited the modern nation building in Europe and the debate about the political character of the European Union. We are used to explain European nation building by Absolutism, civil revolutions, or nationalism and to celebrate European nation building for its exceptionality and modernity. But if we look into the European case in a world historical comparison, we encounter the fact that European nation building was nothing but a result of the very rational political calculation under a specific political geographical condition that there were intensive territorial competitions going on between numerous well-organized states of similar scale. With the focus shifted from the core to the periphery, we can uncover a different countenance of the European Union as a polity, too. Seen from the border region, the European Union seems closer to an empire than a Westphalian system or a post-modern network state, because its border is developing more like a networked border, a march, a colonial frontier and a limes.
